Design ideas to decorate the perfect laundry room

Don’t believe your laundry room has to be that dull, boring place where you only go to throw your dirty socks and towels.  There are numerous ways to revive the “look”, as well as to create a system that gets it organised. It needs to be comfy, cool and pleasant and at the same time, highly efficient. So if you’re looking for design ideas to decorate the perfect laundry room, the list below should be of great help to you.

  • If your laundry room is too small, it’s better to make it look larger. One way to achieve this trick is to stack the dryer on top of the washer (you will need to have a front-loader for that to work). Another is to install stackable cabinets to store your stuff.
  • Add a storage island unit to the centre of the room, to keep unattractive laundry baskets off the floor. This island can double as a folding area as clothes come out of the dryer.
  • If no room for a separate storage island, install a counter top above your washer and dryer.
  • Consider using the space behind the door. It gives you more space to move around and allows you to hang your rubber gloves, disposable packets, or cleaning equipment.
  • Use light paint colours on the walls as well as your other furniture to allow the room to look larger.
  • Backsplash and floor tiles do a great job in creating a cool environment for your laundry room and makes it easy to clean.
  • Ensure you have sufficient light in your laundry room. Preferably you need at least one window for natural lighting. If that’s not enough, consider installing recess lighting behind the shelves and cabinets.
  • Include a wall-mount ironing board directly onto the wall,to handle simple pressing jobs or touch-ups. The ironing board can extend straight out from the wall mount or swivel 90 degrees. Some boards contain a fastening clip for you to attach the iron, allowing for easy storage.
  • If your budget allows, replacing wire mesh shelves with wood shelves or cabinets will upgrade your look. If construction is an option, is there a wall that can be removed or moved to help create the space you want.
  • Mount a clothes hanging rod, preferably at eye level in any open spaces between two wall cabinets, to keep drying clothes crease free or hang recently ironed items.
  • Conceal unsightly laundry products, cleaning supplies and other products in storage baskets in funky colours or designs.

The Laundry Room

The laundry room is the new bathroom, an essential room, the workhorse space in our homes that gets used every day.  The only purpose is not just washing clothes, but also as a craft room, kitchen pantry and maybe even an office?

So should this room just look functional or can you create a stylish room and a happy space?

  • The laundry room is the perfect place to take a style risk with a bolder hue than you might choose for a kitchen appliance. Have fun with it. Go beyond basic white and indulge in a bright red, orange, or blue washer and dryer set. The splash of colour will make the room more inviting, and doing laundry won’t seem quite so tedious. Alternatively, stick to white or metallic appliances and add colour to the walls using wallpaper and colourful paint.
  • To save on space, use stacking kits to safely attach your front-loading washer and dryer. You’ll free up space for other laundry essentials like a folding table, ironing board or a drying rack.
  • Have a dedicated cabinet or cupboard to house laundry detergents and supplies, so that they are easy to get to when needed. Include a cabinet that allows you to fold down or pull-out the ironing board.
  • Cut down on ironing by installing a hanging rack or rail – or even hooks – where freshly dried washing can be hung to prevent creasing.
  • Create a cool environment using backsplash and floor tiles.
  • One last thing to consider is if you have enough light in your laundry room. It’s preferably that you have at least one window for natural lighting. If that’s not enough you should consider installing under cabinet lighting.

Change the wash days to fun days by creating a room that inspires work.
