Whether your ‘home office’ is a blessing or a curse, it is important to note, your attitude and your efficiency will be affected by how you set it up. One of the greatest advantages of a home office is the freedom to decorate and plan your home office exactly as you wish. Let this room be a place where you will want to burn the midnight oil. Here are tips for creating a charming, practical work space.

  1. Space efficiency is crucial. Hang floating shelves on the walls to store documents and keep office equipment off the desk. Remember to use desk file folders to keep important papers within arm’s reach.
  2. Your desk, shelves and storage should serve you, definitely not the other way around. Consider your workflow and what items you need at your fingertips before purchasing furniture and then look for pieces that are both beautiful and functional.
  3. It is very important that your desk is large enough for everything you need to complete. If you merely work on your computer, a small desk will suffice. However, if you require to spread out papers and look at a lot of things at one time, go big. Don’t limit your capabilities by choosing the wrong desk.
  4. If you’re going to be seeing visitors, move around regularly or spin around in your chair, you’re going to need to protect your floors. You need a durable rug to stand up to the wheels of your office chair and the feet of visitors.
  5. Make sure your office has sufficient light to reduce headaches and eye strain. Position the computer monitor so there’s no glare from a window or overhead light, along with a small lamp on the desk for task lighting. Just make sure to get some nice window blinds so you can maintain your privacy in the evening hours.
  6. The colour of your walls can play a big role in how productive you are. It has been proven that greens and blues tend to encourage efficiency, making them ideal colours for a home office.
  7. Chose extras that enhance the comfy feeling of your home office, like a humorous mug as a pencil holder, chic notepads and sticky notes or a bright decorative waste paper basket.
  8. You can’t always decorate the computer, printer, and phone, but you can hide unsightly cords. Start by making sure your equipment is close to outlets and easy to access if you need to switch off and unplug.
  9. Inspire yourself with a piece of framed art, a special photo on your desk, a photo of your children or the next holiday destination to remind you that all your hard work will pay off.
